Aberdeen City Council has taken up efforts to tackle carbon dioxide emissions and make the city a greener place to live.
The five-year Carbon Management Plan started in 2010 aims to decrease CO2 emissions by 23%, which is equivalent to 27,262 tonnes.
The UK Government has started a new carbon tax, named the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) to boost efforts to reduce unnecessary consumption of energy in public places and private organisations.
Currently set at £12 per tonne, the tax is likely to observe an yearly rise.
The City Council is supposed to pay the Government £416,000 in 2012 under the CRC provision. However, the tax will increase every year until there is a drop in the authority's use of energy.
The Council's five-year plan has already seen a significant decrease in the city's CO2 levels, which is around 11,354 tonnes - 3,888 tonnes more than expected for the area alone.
