Software that can search for internet links by simply pointing at an image will become available later this year as HP launches a range of "intelligent" computers and printers.
The embedded Autonomy search software is best known for catching insider trading within banks and monitoring phone calls in call centres, but it is set to become available to use in the home.
HP's newest venture will bring the group more directly into competition with Microsoft and Google, which use similar technologies.
Mike Lynch sold Autonomy to HP in 2011 and now runs its information management business.
Mr Lynch said: "What we have done with people from HP is give them assets and technology to do things with.
"We have the luxury of very high margins that allow them to be experimental. I think they are enjoying that."
