CPI to purchase more inkjet webs

Book printer CPI is embracing digital production by investing in more inkjet webs.

The move comes after the firm installed Europe's first HP T300 inket web, complete with integrated binding line.

Bernard Kieffer, chief technology officer at CPI, told the Interquest Digital Book Printing conference in London that the group was now convinced by the concept and would be purchasing 10 more machines between now and 2015.

He said the group had "very quickly" understood the importance of transforming its fixed costs amid decreasing run lengths.

However he added that digital production would still make up a relatively small part of the 600m books produced across its 16 European sites each year.
