HP 'fourth' on Greenpeace guide

HP has gone up from eighth to fourth place in the Guide to Greener Electronics report, compiled by Greenpeace.

The organisation, which released its 16th edition of the report, has been targeting corporations in the electronics industry for creating environmentally unfriendly products. The guide ranks firms according to how much effort they take in removing hazardous materials from their products every time they launch a new one.

The newest guide contains details of 18 companies and their 'green-ness' in which giants like Dell, Lenovo and Nintendo have failed to make a positive mark.

However, HP has emerged victorious with a 5.5 out of 10 rating, 0.6 points ahead of its score in the last edition (4.9).

The rise in ranking is mainly because the company has eliminated PVC and BFRs in its newest laptop and desktop launches. A PVC-free printer also made its way to retail.

HP hopes to get rid of beryllium and compounds by July next year.

Apple has slipped four ranks from the May 2010 version, from the ninth to the fifth spot. Greenpeace says that this is "not because it has lost any points," but because "several other companies have overtaken it".
