IT giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) has set its sights on attracting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by releasing a low-cost server line, according to reports.
The micro server is part of the corporation's Just Right IT strategy, aimed at firms with eight to 10 workers who cannot afford to invest in expensive computer equipment and software, according to technology website ZD Net.
Other planned products in the Just Right IT line are HP proliant microserver, storageworks P2000 and Microsoft System Care essentials 2010. Prices start at £220, which places the server and storage range within budget for smaller businesses.
James Henry, HP's business development manager for servers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), said it could open up a new market for the US-based company.
He said: "I see Microserver as fitting a gap at the low end of market.Whereas before getting a server would be a step too far, this really simplifies it. It could be our first interaction with any of those customers."
The technology website noted that, in taking steps to woo SMEs by selling Just Right IT products directly to customers as well as through third party sellers, HP has placed itself in competition with Dell and other market rivals.
