Hewlett-Packard (HP) has introduced a new generation of network switches that comply with the new Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) standard.
According to the computer systems firm, the HP E-Series zl modules are the first such Ethernet switches that use the new IEEE 802.3az standard designed to cut power consumption in the data centre.
They reduce the energy consumption by automatically entering sleep mode when no traffic is being transmitted.
The device is supported by Broadcom's new Gigabit Ethernet physical layer chips, and is equipped with the proprietary second-generation 65nm ASIC which enable media access control.
It includes a range of 10 10G and Gigabit Ethernet adapter cards that slot into existing HP chassis.
Chuck Sears, a manager of research computing at the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences in Oregon State University, said in a press release: "With HP's new modules, our network infrastructure is more agile and provides increased bandwidth for our researchers, yet it requires less physical space and consumes less energy."
