HP refutes LaserJet flaw report

HP has refuted a report that a security flaw in its LaserJet printer could give hackers access to the device when connected to the internet and the ability to set it on fire.

The firm said in an online statement: "There has been sensational and inaccurate reporting regarding a potential security vulnerability with some HP LaserJet printers.

"Speculation regarding potential for devices to catch fire due to a firmware change is false."

Although some HP LaserJet devices are vulnerable to cyber attacks when connected to the internet without a firewall, the printers have a hardware element called a "thermal breaker" that is designed to prevent the fuser from overheating or causing a fire, according to the company.

HP said it is building a firmware upgrade to mitigate the security vulnerability.

Reports regarding the security flaw in HP LaserJet printers followed a study by Columbia University scientists, who said they have discovered a technique by which hackers can manipulate ink-drying components.
