HP to buy US software security firm

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced plans to enter the software security market with the acquisition of California-based Fortify Software.

The printer giant said the partnership would provide businesses with a "best-in-class" solution for software and application security, as well as bolstering HP's software and solutions division.

The Fortify bid represents yet another step in HP's long-term strategy to widen its product base and branch out into a variety of new markets.

Bill Veghte, executive vice president for HP's software and solutions arm, said the deal would provide existing HP customers with new and improved products and services.

"With Fortify's leadership in static application security analysis combined with HP's expertise in dynamic application security analysis, organisations will have a best-in-class solution to improve the security of their applications and services," he said.

The Fortify deal will mark the latest in a series of takeovers for HP following the acquisition of networking specialist 3Com for £1.85 billion and smartphone operating system vendor Palm for £766 million recently.

HP said the Fortify takeover will provide customers with new products and solution that help limit risk, adapt to compliance, and enhance cyber security.
