Nottingham beats carbon targets

The latest available figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) show that Nottingham is doing its bit in terms of reducing its carbon footprint.

Across industry, transport and energy services throughout the city, carbon emissions are at an all-time low, and have now fallen for five years in succession.

Per head across the three sectors, emissions have fallen by over a fifth (21%) from 2005 - when 6.5 tonnes were produced.

By 2009, the amount stood at 5.5 tonnes, a significant reduction over such a short space of time and one which is presumed to have continued to drop in the intervening years.

Overall, this reflects a decrease in carbon emissions of 16.78% in the five years - above Nottingham's original target of 15%.

This reflects one of the biggest reductions across the UK.

"These figures are great news for the city and show that the measures we have introduced to tackle climate change are generating positive results already," said councillor Alan Clark, portfolio holder for energy and sustainability.
