Paper firm prepares £17m investment

A paper company has revealed £17 million plans to invest in a materials recovery facility in North Wales.

UPM will develop the facility at its Shotton paper mill and the factory will be equipped to sort dry recyclables, including plastic bottles, newspapers, cardboard, metals and magazines.

Construction on the site, which will allow the mill to source high-quality paper from co-mingled sources, is to begin immediately and is due to be finished by January next year. The new facility will sort 120,000 tonnes of magazines and newspapers, as well as 80,000 of other materials, creating 160 jobs once it is fully operational.

"Our vision for UPM Shotton is to be the frontrunner in creating value from renewable and recyclable materials," said UPM Shotton general manager David Ingham. "Building a materials recovery facility at the site is a natural step towards this vision."

Mr Ingham said the investment would help UPM's development to re-brand itself as the Biofore Company. It aims to create value from recyclable and renewable materials with sustainable developments.
