PC wins Greenpeace award for HP

Hewlett-Packard has won Greenpeace's Best in Show award in Las Vegas after one of its products successfully demonstrated a host of environmentally friendly features.

The leading PC manufacturer was awarded the gong at the Consumer Electronics Show, for the new HP Compaq 8000f Elite Ultra Slim Desktop PC.

Greenpeace praised HP for the computer because it is the first Windows-based PC to be free of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Last year the manufacturer was targeted by Greenpeace for failing to meet its deadline for phasing out toxics in its products.

In its new Guide to Greener Electronics Nokia leads the rankings with a 7.3 score, followed by Sony Ericsson, the only company scoring full marks on all toxic chemicals criteria. Toshiba was third, Philips fourth and Apple was fifth having risen from ninth.

Samsung, Dell, Lenovo and LG Electronics were penalised for failing to follow through on a pledged phase-out of toxic chemicals in products. They have delayed the phase-out to 2011 or beyond , said Greenpeace.
