Tablets 'are going commercial'

A technology expert has predicted that tablets will be more popular in the commercial market, representing half of the devices' total sales.

According to Hewlett-Packard's (HP) channel chief Stephen Di Franco, tablets could be particularly useful for solution providers.

He said: "Upon reflection it will be half commercial and half consumer. We are selling the consumerization of IT and the tablet is something that stands between those two worlds. They solve the problem of the phone being too small and the PC being too big."

The company is set to release its first tablet device, called the TouchPad. The new touch screen computer is based on a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor and runs webOS 3.0.

In the future, HP intends to offer more commercial type tablet devices with enhanced security features and better warranties.

Di Franco hopes that commercial tablets will be accepted by IT departments, with more people using portable devices such as smart phones, notebooks and tablets for work purposes.

He said: "It's an exciting time for us and the channel. The pads will change the way business works. It will change the way training is done and how we interact with each other. It's hard to bring a notebook over and show something to someone, but it's easier with a tab."
