A joint initiative by Xerox and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to improve energy efficiency of printing operations has received a prestigious award.
It won the title of the Public Sector Project of the Year for 2011 at this year's Green IT Awards after enabling the DWP to cut electricity use for printing tasks by up to 63% in just over a year.
As part of the project, Xerox delivered around 8,200 of multi-function printers to replace around 30,000 ink-based machines used by the department.
The use of multi-function printers - which are also capable of copying, scanning and faxing - means a range of task can be carried out on a single device resulting in significant energy savings.
Julie Hesselgrove, director and general manager in global document outsourcing at Xerox, said: "Part of this initiative has involved introducing a sustainable print service through which Xerox has streamlined the department's print environment, provided cost-savings and met sustainability objectives, so DWP can continue to focus on transforming its services for UK citizens."
