Hundreds of consumer items with digitally printed labels and packaging are to be showcased at the HP stand during PackTech 2012 at the NEC in Birmingham at the end of the month, it has been announced.

Organisers claim that the HP Indigo "Digital Supermarket" will demonstrate during the event between February 29 and March 1 how brands will be able to use the benefits of its digital printing to produce innovative packaging solutions.

Julia Cole, UK & Ireland managing director for HP Indigo, said: "The products that will be on display are inspiring examples of how HP Indigo customers can help brands produce packaging that grabs the consumer's attention, not only due its vibrant print quality but with its creative marketing features too.

http://www.xeretec.co.uk/news/green-printing-to-save-costs

Green printing is not only environmentally sustainable but can save companies substantial amounts of money if done properly, says an IT expert.

Ramnath Iyer, chief technology officer at CRISIL, told Express Computer Online: "Green printing can bring value to the organisation and its adoption will only increase in coming years as it would be among the most talked about initiatives within green IT."

A recent study by Xerox has highlighted that the average office worker prints 10,000 pages per year, and wastes 1,140 pages.

A successful green printing strategy should begin with a simple step such as replacing multiple printers with a network printer used by all teams.

Other initiatives include ink cartridge recycling programmes and putting up signs around the office to discourage wasteful printing.

These measures not only add to a green IT strategy but save paper and printer ink, helping save money.

The ability to manage devices under the cloud just got easier with the update to HP's Discovery and Dependency Mapping Advanced (DDMA) software.

The DDMA searches the network and provides information on all hardware and software connected to the network.

It can also give details of anything connected to an IP address whether it is a server, application or router.

The update, Content Pack 10, includes the ability to track resources on services such as Amazon Web and Terremark.

Jimmy Augustine, marketing manager for HP, said: "When clients begin their journey to a hybrid cloud environment, we can help them."

Mr Augustine also said that the new cloud capabilities give users an overview allowing them to manage IT as a business.

Xerox has launched its latest scanner for keen photographers and small offices, the Xerox 7600i.

The compact flatbed scanner handily plugs straight into a computer's USB port and is ideal for small offices or home study rooms that want to produce crystal-clear colour documents. The ultra slim device can scan up to 1200x1200 dpi in 48-bit colour and comes with document and image management software already installed.

The scanner weighs just 3.3 pounds and measures less than 1.5-inches tall. The fact that it can plug straight into a USB port means that the 7600i is a truly portable device. The Xerox scanner also has a removable lid, which provides the added ability to scan books, magazines or other larger objects.

Priced at under $100, the 7600i includes Visioneer OneTouch scanning technology allowing users to scan at the touch of a button.

Bob Scaglia, senior vice president of sales for Visioneer, said the new product was extremely versatile. He said: "It is an ideal solution for anyone who needs a fast flatbed scanner and outstanding software to help them be more productive."

HP has announced the arrival of a new range of LaserJet multifunction printers designed specifically for small and medium size businesses.

The latest offering of HP LaserJet printers will allow user companies to create professional quality colour documents while increasing their productivity and efficiency.

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 printer has faster print speeds without compromising on colour quality while the HP LaserJet Pro 300 can increase productivity with easy print, scan, copy and fax functionality. Both devices utilise a 3.5-inch colour touch screen with an easy-to-use interface and offer the ability to manage office printing with HP Web Jetadmin software.

Donna Fox, vice president of Fox Land Surveys, said the HP range was now her most efficient office printer. She said: "It's quick, quiet and gives us the ability to create a full range of colourful marketing materials for our company."

The colour multifunction printers allow companies such as Fox Land Surveys to create external documents in-house, saving time and money that otherwise would have been budgeted for outside suppliers.

The latest Enyo JavaScript framework has been launched by HP, in a move which should enable new TouchPad WebOS tablet apps to be written.

Enyo, which has now been open-sourced by the technology corporation, will be made available under the Apache 2.0 licence. Its launch forms part of HP's plans to give away WebOS.

The introduction of the new JavaScript app framework should give developers the chance to "distribute Enyo-based WebOS apps across other platforms", according to Sam Greenblatt, technology chief on the HP Open WebOS project.

Commenting in a blog post, he added: "We're proud of WebOS and its potential to harness web standards to improve the next generation of applications, web services and devices."

In addition to the Enyo 2 core, HP suggested that the coming few weeks should see the introduction of its user interface widget set.

Meanwhile, the latest version of the Open WebOS roadmap indicates that August will see the first open-source beta launch of the operating system.

The following month could then see the release of the final version of the system.

RCS Printers has taken an environmentally friendly attitude by making Nissan LEAFs available to their staff.

In the hope of cutting down on energy and reducing the company's carbon footprint, the Nottinghamshire based printer purchased six Nissan LEAFs for its staff of 120. Staff can drive the cars for free if they surrender a small percentage of their monthly salary.

A massive solar panel installation that usually powers the company's 43,000 square foot printing facility in Retford is used to charge the cars, making the carbon-reducing transport completely free, as Nissan LEAFs don't carry any Benefit and Kind taxation.

Michael Todd, managing director and company founder, said RCS ultimately aims to be UK's greenest printer.

He said: "The environment forms a key part of our company ethos and our fleet of Nissan LEAFs build on our vision of becoming the UK's most environmentally friendly printer.

"The LEAF is the first practical five door, five seat EV on the UK market and our staff have embraced all aspects of the car which is why we kept adding them to our fleet."

Newport City Council has made savings of £90,000 by applying the same managed print service tools and techniques that Xerox uses.

The Welsh council has cut its printing costs by a quarter after undergoing a major IT restructuring focused on improving its technology efficiency across more than 50 of its sites. Xerox's managed print service has contributed to these savings by allowing the council to significantly reduce its IT support resources and lower its direct printing costs.

The service has also introduced more flexible working practices. For example, Newport City Council's 3,000 employees can now print documents, scan to email, or network on any device across the 50 sites.

Newport City Council's head of customer and information services, Mark Neilson, said that the changes have allowed the council to make big savings on administration costs.

He said: "We have reduced the costs of processing invoices and ordering consumables for our printers - not to mention the savings we derive from less waste paper and power consumption."

HP is deciding where to establish its new Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) service centre which could create up to 500 new jobs, according to reports from Parkiet.

In the running are Poland, Romania, India and Bulgaria said Jack Levernes, deputy head of HP Europe. If Poland does win the contract it would be HP's third service centre in the country.

Mr Levernes said that at the moment a decision has not been made as the services require more innovation and creativeness, but between 200 and 500 jobs would be created by the move.

The location will be decided upon over the coming six months. Possible locations include Wroclaw, Lodz or Gdansk or the possibly less desirable cities of Rzeszow, Bialystok or Szczecin, reports from Polish business newspaper Pul Biznesu suggest.

Although IBM and P&G would not comment on the HP plan, other global companies including Bayer, Dolby and the Bank of New York may be interested in a similar move.

American IT giant Hewlett Packard (HP) is to prioritise contracts with smaller scale companies, bosses at the organisation have suggested.

HP, the UK Government's largest computing contractor, intends to increase the number of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) currently working with the company from 10% to 15% of its overall expenditure.

The plans could see as many as 150 new SMEs added to HP's current supply chain in the UK, which already has 600 small businesses carrying out sub-contracted work, by the end of 2013.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, HP UK's managing director Nick Wilson said that his company would even consider "redirecting" existing expenditure to ensure the target is met.

The Coalition Government, which has encouraged the sub-contracting of public sector work to SMEs in recent months, welcomed HP's plans.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced that executive vice-president of software, Bill Veghte, is to take on the additional role of overseeing strategy at the company.

Veghte will continue in his existing position but his remit will be expanded to include chief strategy officer. The former Microsoft employee, who joined HP in May 2010, has had a successful spell leading its software division. Veghte has overseen an expansion in HP's software business, with growth of 18% in the last fiscal year.

In addition to leading HP's foray into cloud computing and webOS mobile operating systems, Veghte will also be tasked with keeping HP ahead of its competitors and at the forefront of innovation.

Veghte's expansion of responsibilities comes after a period of restructuring at the American technology firm. Following Mark Hurd's resignation in 2010, Leo Apotheker took over as CEO but lasted only a year in the job. Meg Whitman is now CEO at HP.

Electronics giant Xerox has announced the world's first battery-powered scanner to use WiFi to transfer images between devices.

The Xerox Mobile Scanner, launched this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, uses a free mobile app to transfer images and PDF documents between mobile devices, and can also send information to cloud storage servers.

The scanner, which measures 11.5 by 2.8 by 2 inches, uses Xerox's AutoLaunch system. This allows the unit to automatically detect a page's specifications when it begins to scan.

A full page can be scanned in under 10 seconds, and the unit's battery life is expected to provide enough energy for 300 scans.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) says the demand from customers for cloud services is growing and more and more resellers want to work with a trusted service provider.

Following its move into the cloud and the launch of its Cloud Agile programme, the vendor already has 10 partners on board but expects more to sign up over the course of the year.

Andrew Duce, service provider programme manager at HP UK, said that partners are increasingly specialising in infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and are combining their expertise with HP products.

"Customers are driving the market and every single customer of HP is buying some of IT as a service," he said.

According to Mr Duce, as most customers operate both private and public cloud applications, there will be more pressure on dealers to sell and support a hybrid cloud environment.

A Government renewable energy initiative will pay its first two businesses for their use of renewable heat sources, it has been confirmed.

Sheffield umbrella supplier Booth Brothers and an East Yorkshire holiday cottage company are both set to receive subsidies.

Booth Brothers will receive payment for heating offices using a renewable energy heat pump, while the five lets at Broadgate Farm Cottage in Beverley will be paid for using a ground source heat pump for heat and hot water.

These businesses are the first to be accredited under the scheme - which is costing a total of £860 million.

The aim of the incentive is to boost the number of firms which install heating systems with a low carbon output, such as solar panels, heat pumps and biomass boilers.

About 50% of the UK's carbon emissions currently come from heating, while 95% of generated heat comes from the burning of fossil fuels.

Greg Barker, minister for climate change, said: "Renewable heat is a largely untapped resource and an important new green industry of the future.

"It'll help the UK shift away from fossil fuel, reducing carbon emissions and encouraging innovation, jobs and growth in new advanced technologies."

After months of negotiations Xerox Canada has bought Ontario-based print services company, LaserNetworks.

LaserNetworks will act as a subsidiary of Xerox Canada led by its founder and CEO Chris Stotate, who began his career at Xerox, and retaining all of its 189 staff.

John Quinn, a spokesperson with Xerox Canada said: "LaserNetworks has been strong among the small and medium-sized business market, but was looking to expand among larger enterprises, where Xerox has the most know-how, so the two companies can now play off one another's strengths in the respective markets."

It is hoped that the acquisition will increase the number of managed print services Xerox can offer, while extending the customer base of LaserNetworks

People in Nottingham will soon be able to get online information about energy saving techniques in their homes thanks to a new scheme.

From this month, the city council will use geographical information systems (GIS) and its energy mapping facility to help residents cut back on their bills in response to information about their homes.

The move aims to help cut back usage and the costs of gas and electricity, while reducing carbon emissions.

Alex Moczarski, city energy manager for Nottingham City Council, said: "We're looking to offer the citizens of Nottingham more intelligence through us having more intelligence.

"So we're trying to give them the tools that they need to make sure that they can make those changes that eventually lead to our strategic aims of saving energy and having renewable generation within the city."

GIS specialist Esri UK and the Centre for Economics and Business Research recently found that Nottingham was the UK city most sensitive to increasing energy prices this winter, by applying the technology to socio-economic data.

Fears over hackers getting into HP printers have been quashed by the firm.

At the end of November the firm said that it had concerns that some of its LaserJet printers could be hacked into.

However, since then it has revealed that no costumers have yet to report they have been victims of any unauthorised access.

HP has now developed a firmware update in a bid to protect customers from any instances of hacking in the future.

A statement read: "HP has built a firmware update to mitigate this issue and is communicating this pro-actively to customers and partners. No customer has reported unauthorised access to HP."

It has urged people to protect their printers with a firewall, and to also disable remote firmware on printers which are vulnerable.

The firmware update can be found at www.hp.com/support.

Hewlett-Packard in collaboration with Twitter has launched a new project called TwitterWisher.

HP's campaign takes people's wishes made through Twitter and prints them onto floating balloons that are released into the air.

However, these wish balloons are only released from HP's Middle East headquarters in Dubai Internet City.

Interested people can visit the website to post the message which they want printed on a balloon, through the webapp along with the hashtag #everybody2012.

The website will then send the message to be printed and HP will release the wish on a balloon between 11am and 4pm Dubai local time.

People who send their wish to HP can watch live balloon launches on the TwitterWisher webpage.

It will also allow anyone who finds a balloon with a message to log on to the site and hit the 'I found one' button.

Xerox has announced that industry analyst firm IDC has positioned it as a "leader" in its 2011 Marketscape report for Worldwide Managed Print Services (MPS).

IDC, an independent and global provider of IT research, said that Xerox has secured the position because of its ability to serve businesses of all sizes through its continuum of MPS services delivered by both direct and indirect distribution channels.

Xerox's support for small and mid-sized businesses is highlighted by the research firm via this year's launch of Xerox Partner Print Services.

It includes training and mentoring along with business development, marketing, services, and support.

Marketers stand a much greater chance of engaging with members of the public if they personalise messages with as much specific information they have about consumers as possible, according to a recent survey.

More than two fifths (41%) of respondents told the survey that they are interested in promotional messages received during the holiday season if they contain information and offers relating to their specific interests.

Nearly half of women (45%) said they would be more inclined to read, save and use communications if they were personalised with their name or referred to purchases or products that they had previously made or researched online, according to the survey for Xerox Corporation by Harris Interactive.

Xerox's head of integrated marketing for its developing markets operation in the Middle East and Africa, Dan Smith, said: "Studies show that consumers remember just four of the 3,000 messages we're exposed to every day.

"This survey validates that earning a spot at the top of a consumer's mind, and ultimately driving a purchasing decision, takes insight, individual attention and can be influenced by the way the message is delivered."
